RECONSTRUCT
A Territorial Construction System for a Circular Low-Carbon Built Environment
Start date: 01.06.2023
Duration: 48 months
Coordinator: Institut de Tecnologia de la Construcció de Catalunya - ITeC
Budget: 6.69 M€
Details
Addressing this urgent need to reduce the sector’s strong environmental impact, the EU-funded project RECONSTRUCT aims to achieve increased circularity in the European construction sector. Its primary focus is to develop innovative and eco-friendly alternatives to concrete that minimize the use of virgin resources. These innovative materials will be used in the construction of the demo buildings, whose eventual disassembly is accounted for by design.
RECONSTRUCT will (i) develop low-carbon alternatives to Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), to be used in both renovations and new buildings, and incorporate Construction & Demolition Waste (CDW) and other waste as much as possible, (ii) manufacture construction components that use such materials and are designed for modularity and dismantling so they can either be reused or easily disassembled and recycled, (iii) embed deconstruction in building design and construct circular low-carbon buildings that produce near-zero CDW across their lifecycle.
